What is associated with keeping it off
"What do the people who succeed actually do?" There is a real answer, with a real limitation, and both belong on the same page.
The registry
The most-cited source is a registry of several thousand people who have lost at least ten percent of their body weight and kept it off for at least a year — many of them for much longer. It records what they report doing, and the pattern is consistent:
- They keep monitoring. Most weigh themselves at least weekly, many daily, and most keep some watch on what they eat rather than returning to not knowing.
- They stay active — a lot. The typical level reported is high: about an hour of moderate activity most days, with walking the most common form. Public-health guidance independently puts a substantial weekly amount of activity, plus strength work on two or more days, as the foundation for adults.
- They eat a consistent pattern. Similar meals on weekdays and weekends, breakfast most days, a diet that is lower in energy density than average. Not a special diet; a stable one.
- They react early. Small regains are caught and corrected within weeks, not months. The people who let two kilograms become ten are, by definition, not in the registry.
The limitation, plainly
The registry is self-selected: people who succeeded and chose to enrol. It is self-reported. It has no control group of people who did the same things and regained. So everything above is an association — success and these habits go together — and not proof that adopting the habits causes success. Some of them may be markers of the kind of person who keeps weight off rather than the reason they do. This is why the page title says "associated with" and not "how to".
That said, the direction is not seriously disputed, each habit has a plausible mechanism, and none of them is harmful. Monitoring makes drift visible; activity raises the maintenance level and protects lean mass; consistency removes daily decisions; early reaction keeps corrections small. They are the best available bet, offered as a bet.
What this page does not claim
That any habit guarantees maintenance, that an hour a day is required, or that people who regain did not do these things. Regain has mechanisms that habits reduce, not abolish.
In the app
The streak and the trend are the monitoring habit made cheap; the planned activities and the recurring schedule are the movement made routine. Maintenance mode keeps both running.
